Kim Copeland

I have been a member of GKEF board since it’s inception in 2008. My current responsibilities for the organization include facilitating meetings, setting agendas, and note taking.

I was inspired to join the GKEF board when I went to Guinea in 2008 on a cultural tour with Sarah Lee Parker Koumbassa and Karim Koumbassa. While I was there I spent time in Enco-5 at the Koumbassa/Youla compound and connected with the family, the many children and the community members there. I was immediately accepted and treated as part of the family and was forever changed by the experience. With my teaching background it seemed like a natural fit for me to join an organization that was dedicate to giving children high quality educational experiences. The people in Guinea had given so much to me through generously sharing their music and dance and I wanted to give back.

I am currently a teacher in Edmonds School District where I have been a literacy coach and teacher for thirteen years. I work with elementary age children at a multi-age school and have been dedicated to sharing my experiences in Guinea and helping others to benefit from the richness of Guinean culture since my trip.
